GCSEs
Our school’s teachers and pupils work extremely hard to secure good GCSE grades, and this year 93% of our pupils achieved 5 passes at GCSE or equivalent (A*-C) including English and Maths. The average figure in Kent is just over 50% in way of comparison. Every pupil passed 5 GCSE subjects with 42% of these passes being at A/A*grade.
Towards the end of Key Stage 3, at Lent half term, pupils make their GCSE choices, and this is a critical point in their school careers. In addition to core subjects – English, Mathematics, Science, ICT, Religious Studies, PSHEE and Physical Education – they select four other options, choosing from History, Geography, Drama, French, German, Spanish, Art, Business Studies, Physical Education (Academic), ICT, Food Technology, Graphics Technology, Resistant Materials Technology, Textiles Technology, Music and Photography.
We encourage our students to select subjects that they enjoy. It stands to reason that the more they enjoy studying a subject, the more likely they are to do well.
Students Eligible for the English Baccalaureate
Pupils have the option of taking a combination of subjects sufficient to be eligible for the English Baccalaureate, which encourages and facilitates a more rounded educational experience and requires English, Mathematics, one Science, History or Geography, and a Modern Foreign Language.
We have developed an excellent support system to help parents and pupils through the sometimes difficult process of choosing GCSE subjects: tutors give guidance; we have a GCSE Guide that clearly explains all the options; and our Academic School Co-ordinator gives presentations to both parents and pupils. If you would like to get in touch with her, please email moira.eddy@doyrms.com
Careers guidance is a consistent thread running through school, and we encourage pupils to undertake work experience during long school holidays, arranged by a specialist external agency. Pupils in Years 9 to 11 are provided with careers education and access to advisers such as those who work with Connexions and ISCO.
