In the Community

Managing a Combined Cadet Force

Located on the edge of Dover – a town with a proud military history of its own – the Duke of York’s Royal Military School plays an increasingly important role in the community, both locally and further afield.

Our expertise in managing a Combined Cadet Force which brings out children’s camaraderie and leadership qualities has been recognised by a local school which has asked us to set up a CCF unit for them and train their instructors.

Partnerships with Local Schools

Local residents are also starting to benefit directly through our new partnership with nearby Guston Primary School, which uses our athletics track for sports day. Guston pupils have access every week to our outstanding sports facilities, including rugby coaching and use of the swimming pool, and we are developing a programme of coaching and participation days (to be confirmed).

Using Forensics to Teach Chemistry

Our excellent Science department has several active outreach projects involving schools and universities both close to home and as far away as Cork. We run workshops to train teachers in how to use forensics to teach chemistry; our Chemists set primary school pupils’ imaginations alight with projects on combustion, with all the accompanying booms, bangs and fires; and the intriguingly named ‘Molecules in Murder’ is a lecture all about poisons, taught externally at university.

An Ecology Trail

150 mainly green acres of land and many tagged specimen trees make our school grounds the perfect setting for an ecology trail for local children, and we have developed an exciting electrical circuits package which primary schools can use to teach pupils about physical separation techniques (to be confirmed).

Active in the Neighborhood

Our pupils are more active in the local neighbourhood than ever before. They visit nearby primary schools to share information with them about food technology and other subjects, and we include the schools in our music tours. Further afield, Sixth Formers are taking part in the prestigious Royal Society of Chemistry Olympiad – just one more way in which we are successfully establishing ourselves in the wider community.
