New to boarding?

Boarding is an option

If your child has always attended a day school, you may think that boarding isn't for your family, or you may think that you simply wouldn't be able to afford it.

In fact, more families are now considering boarding, especially if their child hasn't secured a grammar school place, or any other first choice school. Whereas many independent schools can charge around £8,000 per term, we charge just £3,250 per term as you only pay for the boarding fees, your child's education is paid for by the state.

Exciting opportunities

Your child will live and study with us for 39 weeks of the year, and will enjoy an independent school lifestyle with sports, music, CCF and international trips all playing a key role in their time here. Exeat weekends (when your child can come home) and Sunday visiting opportunities means that you will have regular contact with your child.

The Duke of York's Royal Military School is the first full state boarding school in the country. We are non-selective, but every child who wishes to study with us does get invited for a 'suitability for boarding' interview with the Headmaster. He will explain what life is like at the school, and discuss any concerns. Our pupils always say how much they like their 'Dukie' community and you will soon understand what they mean when you visit us.

Taster Weekend

We recognise that not every child suits boarding and would rather live at home. We also recognise that many children thrive at our school and enjoy a busy and fun community environment where they can live and study with their friends. We encourage parents to come and visit us, to be shown around the school and the boarding houses, and we always let one of our pupils do the tour, so that you and your child can ask any questions that you might have. We also offer Taster Weekends so that your child can try boarding with us to see if they like it.

Children from all backgrounds

We have children studying with us from all different backgrounds, some have parents in the armed forces and need continuity of education, some have parents who work long hours and would prefer for their child to be studying in a safe environment, while others live in Kent but like the ethos of our school and want their child to experience a well-rounded quality education.
