Weekends

Dukies Can Kick Back and Relax

Weekends are the time when Dukies can kick back and relax like any other teenager even at our military academy. After Saturday morning lessons, children can play in School teams or choose to take part in the abundance of activities organised for them, or they can just chill out and do their own thing.

Many Pursuits and Hobbies

Pupils are introduced to a wide range of pursuits and hobbies at the academy, giving them the opportunity to discover what they enjoy best, be it movies or making models, rugby or swimming. Each of them joins at least two School Clubs, which are run by teachers but very much ‘owned’ by the children. During exeat weekends, whilst some children return home, many others stay at school and staff are still on site running activities with something for everyone. The academy grounds are filled with the various sounds of everything from jazz music, trampolining and drama rehearsals to choir practice, indoor hockey and drumming.

Mini Cinema and an Excellent Library

We have a mini cinema and an excellent library, fitness suite, computer games, a pool table, air hockey, table tennis… the list goes on. The trips we organise are always popular and include cinema outings, Howletts Wild Animal Park, bowling, comedy nights, shopping, and visits to galleries and theatres.

School Discos and DJ Nights

Other fun things to do include school discos and DJ nights in the Nye Hall, treading the boards in music and drama productions, and even a Saturday night talent competition. And whatever the time of year, there are enough sports fixtures and games against other schools to satisfy even the most ardent sports enthusiast.

So Much To Do Here

Pupils are given controlled access to the nearby town of Dover - we ensure for example that they are back in school by 6.00pm, Juniors only have access during Summer term, and Sixth Formers let us know where they will be - but most prefer to stay on site because there is so much to do here.

Relax and Wind Down with Pizza

Children sometimes just relax and wind down with pizza and a DVD, or hang out with their friends. Most Housemasters and Housemistresses give their House Council a budget and pupils decide as a team what to buy. Food is a particular favourite – crisps, noodles, milk and cereals are top of the shopping list! House subs are used to buy anything from books to make-up and personal presentation lessons – and even an origami workshop!
