Is The Duke of York’s Royal Military School a military Academy (a disciplinary school)?

The Duke of York’s Royal Military School (DOYRMS) is not a disciplinary school.  It is a modern boarding school with a rich military ethos and heritage. The words ‘Royal’ and ‘Military’ in the school’s title denotes its foundation; by Royalty for Military families and honours the long-standing connection that the school has with the British Armed Forces, enabling the children of serving personnel to have a stable education during their parents’ regular postings. 

We offer a traditional syllabus for GCSEs, A Levels and BTECs. We pride ourselves on being a non-selective egalitarian school, which offers a fully rounded education, developing character and resilience in our students. 

The school has its own Regimental Sergeant Major, who oversees the ceremonial aspects of the school. Part of this role focusses on encouraging Dukie leadership and resilience. The school also has a Director of Military Music, who is in charge of a 50-strong student military band. 

Who can apply to The Duke of York’s Royal Military School?

As a state boarding school, education here is provided for free by the UK government. Parents are only required pay for the boarding costs. We welcome applications from students who have the right to access state-funded schools. 

Parents of foreign national children are accountable for verifying their eligibility under UK entry regulations before applying for admission. State-funded schools and local authorities are not obligated to request proof of eligibility.

Do you accommodate day students?

The school currently only offers full or weekly boarding. However, from September 2025, we will be opening to Day Boarders. More information on our boarding options can be found here

Are there any weekends when students cannot go home?

Students can go home at weekends after school commitments, as agreed with the students Boarding House. There is one weekend across the year when we ask all students to stay in School (Remembrance Weekend). This is when we hold a Remembrance Sunday Parade, where many Old Dukies come back to the school.

Where do I buy the uniform?

Grays Teamsports

https://www.graysteamsports.com/collections/duke-of-york-royal-military-school) provide the schools sportswear. To help spread the cost for uniform, some sportswear can be purchased later, depending on which Term the sport takes place.
