Life as a Junior (Year 7) Dukie

When students join us in Year 7, they will enter one of our dedicated Junior Boarding Houses - Nelson for Girls and Trenchard for Boys. All students are carefully introduced into boarding life by the pastoral team, so they feel supported and confident in their new environment. All students have access to WI-FI across the school site, so staying in touch with home is easy.

Both houses offer dayrooms, quiet areas and games rooms. Students enjoy dormitory life with up to 7 other students per dorm.

All our teaching staff work within a House pastoral team as either Houseparents or academic tutors, providing a support network. This allows our students to thrive in the Boarding Houses and also creates an enhanced relationship in the classroom.

Our Joining Year 7 webinar starts at 10:30 on Saturday 9 October, you can register and access this webinar through the email you have received.

Alternatively, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us by email: admissions@doyrms.com.

Initially sharing a dorm with up to 6 students, by Year 11, students have their own rooms and take on leadership roles within the House.

New students are carefully introduced into boarding life by the pastoral team, so they feel supported and confident in their new environment. All students have access to WI-FI across the school site, so staying in touch with home is easy.

Pastoral Care and Boarding

Boarding lies at the heart of the School and we are committed to creating a home away from home, a comfortable environment and a friendly close-knit community.

Every child is encouraged to find and develop their strengths, be it in the classroom, on the sports field, in the music room or in the Boarding House. They learn about leadership and loyalty, tolerance and healthy competition, and they understand that they have to work hard and be fully committed to achieving their personal goals.

Boarding Life at DOYRMS

Our pastoral team comprises the following:

  • Assistant Principal (Boarding, Behaviour and Intervention) – Mr Jolyon Marsh
  • Designated Safeguarding Lead / RSM - Mr Andy Howell
  • Housemasters & Housemistresses
  • Deputy Housemasters & Housemistresses
  • Pastoral Leaders (Matrons)
  • Tutors

Parents have piece of mind knowing that house staff know and understand their students well. Students quickly feel a sense of belonging; they mature and develop in a nurturing environment, rise to new challenges and are able to confidently embrace every opportunity in a safe and secure environment.

Students enjoy constructive and positive relationships with the staff around them. They reported how they had developed trust with houseparents and felt that they could talk to them about anything. One student said, “The new housemaster is so awesome. He really listens to us.” Other students said, “Being 'Dukies' is like being in a big family that always looks after you".
