Remembrance Events
This November, students and staff participated in a series of significant Remembrance events across South East England and Belgium, continuing a legacy that dates back over a century.
In 1920, when the body of the ‘Unknown Warrior’ was returned to Britain from the Western Front, students from the Duke of York’s Royal Military School formed the Honour Guard at Dover Docks for the solemn arrival. As a school originally only for students of military personnel and with a extensive list of serving alumni, the school is closely associated with Remembrance commemorations.
This year, 20 students, affectionately known as ‘Dukies’, joined the annual pilgrimage of the British Torch of Remembrance. Their journey included attending the Torch Kindling Service at Westminster Abbey on 5 November, followed by services at Dover Cruise Terminal, Tyne Cot, Menin Gate, Roeselare, and Bredene. The pilgrimage culminated at the King’s Parade in Brussels, where the students paid their respects alongside international dignitaries and veterans.

“Remembrance is a profound tradition at The Duke of York’s Royal Military School, and it holds deep significance for our students and staff,” said Alex Foreman, Principal. “As a school with a proud heritage, we are honoured to continue paying tribute to those who have served and sacrificed. Our students are not only learning about history but are also carrying forward a legacy of respect and gratitude which spans generations.”
Closer to home, on the school’s expansive 150-acre estate, around 500 students participated in a Remembrance parade and service, held at the School’s own cenotaph and Chapel. Joining this act of Remembrance were a number of alumni who, like existing students, reflected on the past and honoured the courage and dedication of all those who have served.
