Centenary House

Centenary House, an integral part of the Sixth Form experience at the School, offers exceptional en-suite accommodation tailored to the needs of students transitioning into this pivotal phase of their education. Designed to foster independence while providing essential support, the House boasts round-the-clock assistance from a dedicated team of staff, including residential members and Pastoral Leaders (Matrons). With spacious social areas conducive to academic support and mentoring, the House ensures a nurturing environment where students can thrive academically and personally as they embark on their Sixth Form journey.

In return, the House expects students to set the highest of personal standards; by working hard, contributing to all areas of House and School life, and becoming role models to the younger years.

Houseparent Note

As the houseparent of Centenary, I believe in treating our Sixth Form students as the young adults they are, preparing them for the independence and responsibilities of adult life. At the same time, I recognise the importance of providing a supportive, nurturing environment where they can thrive. Through a full range of House activities, from movie nights to bingo and quizzes, we create a balanced experience that fosters both personal growth and a strong sense of community.

Stepping Stone to University

The Duke of York’s Royal Military School serves as an excellent stepping stone to university, providing students with a unique blend of independent living, life skills, and strong academic preparation. The school’s boarding environment fosters independence, as students learn to manage their time, responsibilities, and personal needs—key skills for success at university.

Additionally, the school places a strong emphasis on life skills, such as leadership, teamwork, and resilience, which are cultivated through military traditions and a wide range of extracurricular activities. Academically, the rigorous curriculum is designed to challenge students and prepare them for the demands of higher education, ensuring they are well-equipped to excel in university settings. This holistic approach makes the transition to university smoother and more successful for graduates.

In 2024, the school saw 95% of our students are moving on to university, with 73% achieving their aspirational first choice and 38% of our students moving to Oxbridge and Russell group universities. However, the school also supports students to secure other destinations, with several students beginning military careers, and others chosing high-level apprenticeships, in fields such as Nuclear Engineering. A full destination list can be viewed here.

To move into Centenary House is to take a step into adult life. A middle ground between the school and the outside world, Centenary encourages its students to seize the leadership opportunities the senior school has to offer.

Social Events at Centenary

Centenary House boasts a thriving social event calendar for its students, offering a rich variety of experiences beyond the classroom. From formal dinners and themed parties to talent shows and charity events, there is always something happening to engage students and build a strong sense of camaraderie. These events provide opportunities for students to socialise, develop new friendships, and unwind in a supportive and lively environment, making school life both enjoyable and memorable.

The House has four dayrooms (Common Rooms), each with SKY television, sofas and cooking facilities. Students can visit the town daily, outside of School commitments, and at weekends they can also travel slightly further afield.

Centenary House is a great gateway to ‘real life’ as it is a mixed-sex boarding house (boys on the ground floor, girls on the first floor) and the students are given more independence in their day-to-day life plus more perks. –  Muddy Stilettos, Best Schools Guide
