Significant Military Award for our Combined Cadet Force Major

Major Andrew Nunn, former DOYRMS teacher, has been awarded ‘Commander Home Command Commendation’ for his outstanding contribution to the British Army. This is a rare and significant award which particularly recognises Major Nunn’s highly valued work with our Combined Cadet Force, which is one of the largest in the country. At a special ceremony held at the school, Lieutenant General Tyrone Urch CBE, Commander of Home Command, presented the award in front of staff and governors.

Major Nunn joined the CCF in 1985 and was appointed to the school in 1986, becoming Head of Religious Education. During his extensive 34-year CCF career, he has been a great supporter of all CCF summer and adventurous training camps as well as contributing to the school’s ceremonial traditions. Although he retired in 2012, Major Nunn occasionally teaches and acts as Inspecting Officer at parades. He wears the CCF Medal with three Clasps, reflecting his distinguished and valuable service.

Steven Saunderson, the school’s Lieutenant Colonel and Vice Principal, said: “We has benefitted greatly from Major Nunn devoted service, and he continues to assist us with our CCF, as a school governor and trustee of the school's ‘Dukies’ Foundation’ charitable trust. Major Nunn is also Secretary of the British Torch of Remembrance, an Anglo-Belgian veterans’ organisation which makes an annual pilgrimage to Flanders and Brussels. His energy and enthusiasm has reinvigorated the organisation and forged ever-closer links with the Belgian Ambassador, the Government of Flanders and Belgian civic authorities. This has resulted in the award of membership of the Fédération Nationale des Combattants de Belgique/Nationale Strijdersbond van België, veterans’ organisation.”

Major Nunn previously received the Lord Lieutenant of Kent’s Meritorious Service Award in 2012 for his services to the Combined Cadet Force movement.
