New prefects will take over from after half-term as our current prefects are given some space to focus on their examinations. A huge thank you to the current prefects for their hard work and dedication; throughout the many challenges, they have been fabulous.

Both prefects and JUO’s are chosen after a rigorous application process that involves a letter of application and an interview. But the selection of prefects and JUO’s starts months before we advertise the roles. If Dukies want to be a prefect or JUO this time next year, evaluating themselves against our values now, will help them appreciate if they are in with a chance or not. If not, it’s not too late!

We are looking for leadership, role models, Dukie fierce pride, values and most of all good character, particularly when no one is watching. We don’t expect the finish article either – this is about giving students the opportunity to develop; it really is about potential as well as talent.

Just with prefects alone, we had nearly 60 applications and I know some Dukies will feel disappointed if they have missed out. For that reason, there are always two spare places for students to demonstrate they have what it takes and will complement the team in January 2023.

For both JUO’s and Prefects, they are told to take the opportunity and not to waste it. Most of all, they should remember that with this Dukie honour comes responsibility.
